Today I finally got off the resort and got to experience some of the rich, natural beauty that Mexico has to offer.
First, the cenotes! Formed by natural degradation of limestone groundwater reservoirs, these pools of crystal clear water were considered sacred places by the Mayans. The water temperature was a refreshingly cool 72 degrees (22C), and seriously the clearest water I have ever swam in. Due to the slow rate of water flow in the cenotes, everyone had to shower off before entering so as to best protect the integrity of the water and the wildlife that live in it. Absolutely no sunscreen permitted.
After the cenotes, our group went to do some snorkling at a nearby coral reef. The sea turtles were fantastic 🙂
